Since Halloween comes around with ‘nary a difference from one year to the next, you’d think that editors eventually would be stumped to come up with a new topic for their writing staffs. This month, Costa Mesa subscribers to the Wall Street Journal’s real estate pages were treated to a creative solution: The Journal simply dug up some scary stories about real estate.

The first was “Home Renovation Horror Stories,” a chilling retelling of just how wrong remodeling attempts can go. These spooky construction nightmares that happened in real life lived up to the premise, starting with readers’ complaints that, rather than the good old days when a kitchen renovation was a huge ordeal, today “just finding qualified workers to do the job is a huge

If you own (or intend to own) your own Costa Mesa house, some portion of your brain is probably attuned to late-breaking housing news. This may ring true for you—particularly if you have ever found yourself suddenly paying attention after hearing a newscaster utter the words “crisis,” “surge,” “slump,” or “rebound” combined with “housing” or “single-family.” If you found yourself hitting the remote’s rewind button to go back and see what the story was, you’re one of Costa Mesa’s homeowners who shares this subconscious alert system.

Costa Mesa real estate professionals have a more active line into real estate scuttlebutt. One of our monitored sources is the NAHB—the National Association of Home Builders. In recent years, the news out of their

Flipping Homes

The fix-and-sell investment strategy is as popular as ever thanks to exposure on cable television—both as TV series and late-night advertorials. Costa Mesa fixer-upper properties offer first-timers a straightforward way to test the real estate investment waters. The simplicity of the strategy is appealing—but as presented in 30-minute chunks, a bit over-simplified.

Last week, Forbes magazine posted a relevant commentary aimed at informing new real estate investors of some basic stages common to just about every Costa Mesa fixer-upper project. It amounts to a 5-part master checklist for fixer-upper project management:

  1.       Inspecting. Spotting and detailing problems is the first order of business. Forbes gives a rundown of the major

You don’t have to convince local homeowners about the wisdom of owning your own Costa Mesa house—but for a while a couple of years ago, that wasn’t universally agreed upon. There was a while there where financial analysts were pointing to the costs of maintenance, interest on mortgage payments, relatively low rental rates, and a bundle of other factors in an argument against owning your own house.

Those voices have been hard to find of late—the numbers make that case pretty hard to support. More common are the analyses like the one CNBC’s The Oracles published last week. The Oracles are “a mastermind group of the world’s leading entrepreneurs.” They assembled a list of 9 reasons that support their contention that owning your own house is a
