Last week’s Wall Street Journal’s “Heard on the Street” headline “Why Home Prices Have Nowhere to Go But Up” may have guaranteed attention—but at the cost of advancing a pretty iffy notion. Then again, if you have been window shopping (or is it “screen shopping”?) through the Costa Mesa listings anytime recently, the idea could well have seemed less preposterous than usual. Of course, markets go up, down, and sideways. In residential real estate, any “down” movement has a centuries-long track record of proving to be temporary. But “nowhere to go but up”? Putting aside the common wisdom that nothing is guaranteed in a free market, author Justin Lahart does lay out a reasonable argument for why today’s pattern of home price rises is peculiarly

Of all the attention-grabbing terms to be found in Costa Mesa listings, the audacious “as-is” ranks right up there near the top of the deck. Intentional or not, it carries a pronounced dramatic aura. Contractors see Costa Mesa “as-is” listings as calls to action. House flippers’ pulse rates quicken when they come across it. For most typical prospective buyers, on the other hand, the same term triggers furrowed brows and a hasty move onto the next listing. “As-is” carries shades of meaning with legal implications, but in general, it simply signals to the world that the seller is not interested in improving the offered property. If something needs to be fixed, it’s up to the next owner to handle it. For that reason, Costa Mesa as-is listings are

Last year, Costa Mesa readers started reading about real estate sales transacted in bitcoin. Since Costa Mesa real estate changes hands through transactions involving six- or seven-figure dollar amounts, the idea of actually completing sales in the mysterious new digital coinage was novel enough to get a lot of attention. “Will Bitcoin Revolutionize How Real Estate is Bought and Sold?” asked NAR.com this past February. The answer was maybe, but probably not in a meaningful way—at least not any time soon. So Costa Mesa homeowners needn’t feel that they are likely to be left out of some momentous advantage if they don’t constantly track bitcoin’s value gyrations. But there is a related phenomenon that could prove to be more of a Costa Mesa real estate

As with any momentous decision, settling on when to sell your Costa Mesa house can take time—and even then, acting on the decision can be slowed by extraneous factors. Who doesn’t have local obligations to deal with and Costa Mesa friends and neighbors who’ll need to be reassured that your relationship isn’t going to be irredeemably severed? Acting on a decision to sell your Costa Mesa house can seem to be the real estate equivalent of moving an ocean liner with a single tugboat: very slow going. Even so, there are persuasive reasons why you might want to move the process along more quickly than momentum would dictate. Recently some of those reasons were laid out in Realtor, the official magazine of the National Association of REALTORS®. It’s
