The importance of “curb appeal” as a factor for selling Costa Mesa homes has never been questioned. It’s as important as packaging is to breakfast cereal makers—or to any manufacturer whose products compete for shelf space in a supermarket. “Curb appeal” produces a potential homebuyer’s first impression—and that has a way of influencing a lot of what follows.

Yet just exactly the degree to which curb appeal determines any Costa Mesa home’s sales success is—like most of the other factors that go into the art of selling—not something that you’d think would lend itself to scientific study.

Not so, as the slogan on the masthead of the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics proclaims. The editors of that periodical take an opposing view:

We Realtors® aren’t shy about laying out the case for why home sellers and buyers overwhelmingly choose to conduct their home sales through Costa Mesa real estate agents. By themselves, the positive reasons are persuasive enough: our services that are proven, reliable, and sanctioned by California’s licensing officials. Since just about everybody has friends or relatives who have completed their own house sale through a licensed Costa Mesa real estate agent, that powerful positive word of mouth completes the picture.

But there is also a mountain of evidence why the alternative—the ‘For Sale by Owner’ route—is so rarely chosen. It doesn’t take a lot of compelling histories of FSBO failure attempts to dissuade would-be do-it-yourselfers. Homeowners

January has often been a month when Costa Mesa homeowners decide to get serious about projects they’ve put on hold during the past year. It’s only logical: most of us tend to regard the annual calendar changeover as a kind of mental departure point. “Out with the old! In with the new!” is more than just a greeting card motto: January has long been a month for committing to major initiatives.

Deciding to sell your Costa Mesa home can be such a project—and when you combine that January milestone idea with the popular acceptance of spring as the key home-selling season, you might think that right now—in mid-January—is the ideal time to begin preparations. In the past, that was often the case. But if the National Association of Realtors®’ latest

In most reports about the gang-busters records set during the just-finished holiday shopping season, a lot of attention was given to the shifting nature of buying and selling. Bricks-and-mortar businesses did alright—but most of the gains in commercial activity were set online. No surprise, there—at least not to the shops and big-box stores who’d seen it coming and built websites accordingly.

Those of us who labor in Costa Mesa real estate have long since adapted to the technology that empowers consumers so successfully. It had once been argued that, by opening free public access to multiple listing data and asking nothing in return, Realtors® were giving away the keys to the kingdom (and to our own livelihoods!). When everyone can easily canvass
