No doubt about it: this year’s holiday atmosphere has now so thoroughly blanketed Costa Mesa that any of our Scrooge-tempered neighbors will have had to retreat homeward to avoid being overwhelmed by the good cheer. From the Christmas trees brightening shop corners everywhere to the sound of carols and the growing number of newer holiday pop classics monopolizing Costa Mesa loudspeakers indoors and out, the holidays have indisputably seized center stage.

For a while there, given the early onset of holiday ad blitzes, it might have seemed possible for any adult so inclined to ride out the season behind a gruff, ‘these holidays are just a merchandising gimmick’ attitude. But the undertones of goodwill and generosity, supercharged by relentless…

Santa Surprised

There is a shift underway—an unexpected one—that may affect the supply of Costa Mesa homes for sale. Experts project housing needs based upon measurable data. But sometimes, unexpected trends materialize…

The frequently cited nationwide housing shortage is largely ascribed to a falloff in builders willing to enter the market—a phenomenon that’s backed up by housing starts statistics which continue to register feeble readings. But now there is another phenomenon—one that has more to do with a cultural shift linked to the growing population of senior citizens.

That demographic bulge has been long expected—it triggered a considerable wave of nursing home construction. Yet those nursing home facilities are beginning to experience something totally…

Quite a pronouncement.

There followed a quick summary of the…

Costa Mesa’s Sunday was officially called “Sofa Sunday”—possibly in recognition of its service as a welcome interlude between Black Friday sales, Small Business Saturday sales, and Cyber Monday sales. Football games on TV also drove many Thanksgiving celebrants to the sofas, where early pregame news flashes projected Sunday as “the busiest travel day” in history. By midday, it turned out that local viewers would have started to doubt those predictions.

The obstacle was the California storms that had been drenching the West Coast. By Sunday, they were well on their way East, shredding Midwest and East Coast airline travel schedules. For the majority of Costa Mesa travelers who’d avoided the airports, holiday highway traffic at least gave them a…
